Performances begin Thursday, March 20, 2025 at the Booth Theatre in New York CitySadie Sink attends the 28th Annual Critics Choice Awards on January 15, 2023 in Los Angeles, California.

Sadie Sink is coming back to the boards!

The actress and Stranger Things will star in the Broadway premiere of John Proctor Is the Villain, a new play by Kimberly Belflower directed by Tony winner Danya Taymor.

Performances begin Thursday, March 20, 2025 at the Booth Theatre in New York City ahead of an opening night on Monday, April 14.

Set in a Georgia high school, the play follows a group of students studying Arthur Miller’s classic play, The Crucible, in their English class — though “young love, sex ed and a few school scandals” are preoccupying their minds, according to an official synopsis. Still, “as they delve into the American classic, the students begin to question the play’s perspective and the validity of naming John Proctor the show’s hero.”

This will be Sink’s third Broadway credit. She previously starred in the 2012 revival of Annie, and later was an alternative for Young Elizabeth in 2015’s Helen Mirren-led play, The Audience.

John Proctor Is the Villain is the first time Sink will lead a Broadway play. It’s also the first Broadway credit for Belflower, an young playwright who has had her work commissioned, produced and developed regionally to great acclaim.

“With deep wells of passion and biting humor, John Proctor is the Villain is a new comedy from a major new American voice, capturing a generation in mid-transformation, running on pop music, optimism, and fury, and discovering that their future is not bound by the past,” a release reads.

A full cast is expected to be announced at a further date.

Sink is one of the breakout stars of Stranger Things, her character — Max Mayfield — being a major focus of season 4. The show catapulted her into the spotlight, and has led to roles in The Whale and Taylor Swift’s short film, All Too Well.

Ironically, the actress’ return to Broadway comes the same season Stranger Things: The First Shadow — the award-winning prequel play based on the Netflix series — comes to Broadway.

Based on an original story by Stranger Things creators, directors, and executive producers Duffer Brothers as well as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child scribe Jack Thorne and Stranger Things writer and co-executive producer Kate Trefry, Stranger Things: The First Shadow is rooted in the mythology and world established in the series.

Its plot takes audiences back to Hawkins, Indiana — but this time, it’s decades before the series (which is set in the ’80s) begins. Instead, it’s 1959 and Jim Hopper, Joyce Maldonado (later Joyce Byers) and Bob Newby — originated onscreen by David Harbour, Winona Ryder and Sean Astin, respectively — are students themselves, meeting new student Henry Creel (who fans will know goes on to become the show’s ultimate villain, Vecna).Netflix Adapts Stranger Things for the Stage in The First ShadowStranger Things: The first Shadow, transferring to the Big Apple from its run in London’s West End, will begin begins performances on Friday, March 28 at the Marquis Theatre ahead of an official opening of Tuesday, April 22.
