Gene Hackman and Wife Betsy Arakawa Found Deceased – Friends Remember Their Deep Bond and Kindness
Legendary actor Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 65, were found deceased at their Santa Fe, N.M. home, leaving friends and neighbors in shock.
Longtime friends Daniel, Barbara, and Aaron Lenihan, who lived nearby, described Hackman and Arakawa as deeply devoted to one another. “They were always doing stuff for other people,” they told PEOPLE, remembering the couple as incredibly kind and generous.
Barbara Lenihan, 75, said they had been preparing themselves for Hackman’s passing due to his age, but the sudden nature of their deaths left them stunned. “We are just shocked,” she said, adding that Arakawa was always full of life.
Authorities revealed that the couple had likely been deceased for several days before being discovered. Arakawa’s body was found next to an open bottle of pills, showing signs of mummification, while one of their dogs was also found dead. Two other dogs on the property were unharmed. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office has launched an active investigation into the circumstances.
Aaron Lenihan, 38, recalled Hackman and Arakawa as one of the closest couples he had ever seen. The French Connection star taught him painting, while Arakawa, a classical pianist, would perform during gatherings. “They seemed like real life partners, really, really close to each other,” he said.
As Hackman aged, Arakawa was highly protective of him, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring he stayed home and safe. “She always wore a mask when we saw her,” Aaron noted, emphasizing how much she prioritized Hackman’s well-being.
Daniel Lenihan, 79, observed that in recent months, Hackman had become increasingly homebound and was “really slipping.” The family saw him less and less, as Arakawa took on the role of caregiver.
“They had a fantastic relationship,” Aaron said. “We loved them both very much, and we’re heartbroken.”
Hackman is survived by his three children from his first marriage to Faye Maltese. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of death.
