In a high-stakes clash between American League contenders, Jazz Chisholm Jr. delivered a dramatic go-ahead double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the New York Yankees to a 4–2 win over the Baltimore Orioles, sealing the series at Yankee Stadium on Sunday.
With the game tied at 2–2, the Yankees staged a rally in the eighth inning sparked by Giancarlo Stanton, who led off with a single to left off Baltimore reliever Bryan Baker (2-3). With runners on first and third and one out, Chisholm stepped up to the plate and quickly worked a 3-0 count. On the next pitch — his first fastball of the at-bat — the Yankees third baseman jumped all over it, lacing a two-run double into the right-center gap, just in front of the 385-foot sign near the Yankees’ bullpen.
Ben Rice scored easily from third, and pinch runner Paul Goldschmidt, entering the game in a rare base-running role, raced home as well. His slide narrowly beat the tag from former Yankee Gary Sánchez, giving New York a decisive 3–2 lead.
It was yet another big moment for Chisholm, who’s been red-hot since returning from an oblique injury on June 3. Sunday marked his seventh multi-hit game in that span, and he played a role in all four Yankees runs.
Earlier in the game, Chisholm got the Yankees on the board in the second inning. After reaching base, he scored the tying run on a clutch RBI single from DJ LeMahieu — a play that knocked Baltimore catcher Maverick Handley out of the game following a tough collision at the plate.
Chisholm wasn’t done. After putting the Yankees ahead in the eighth, he added an insurance run later in the frame. Advancing to third on a throw home, Chisholm bolted for the plate and scored on a ground ball from LeMahieu when Sánchez dropped the throw from shortstop Gunnar Henderson, extending the lead to 4–2.
The Yankees got a solid outing from rookie right-hander Will Warren, who allowed both Baltimore runs in the first inning but settled in to complete 6 1/3 innings, giving up six hits while striking out six and walking two.
After Tim Hill recorded the final two outs of the seventh, he struggled with command in the eighth, walking the first two batters. But Fernando Cruz (2-3) came in and shut the door with authority, striking out Ramón Laureano, Colton Cowser, and Cedric Mullins in succession to preserve the lead.
Closer Devin Williams worked around a baserunner in the ninth to earn his 10th save of the season, continuing a strong campaign as the Yankees’ ninth-inning anchor.
Baltimore starter Dean Kremer was solid despite the loss, surrendering just one run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked one, keeping the Orioles in the game until the late collapse.
The Orioles opened the scoring in the top of the first, with Ryan O’Hearn and Colton Cowser each driving in a run via an RBI single and a double, respectively. But that would be all the offense Baltimore could muster.
After winning 14 of their previous 20 games, the Orioles dropped their second straight — a minor stumble in an otherwise dominant stretch. The Yankees, meanwhile, capitalized on key mistakes and timely hitting to continue their momentum in a tightly contested AL East race.
For Chisholm and the Yankees, Sunday’s win was a gritty, resilient performance — the kind that could define a season down the stretch.
