NFL writer predicts 49ers will replace Brock Purdy with Mac Jones as franchise QB image

The San Francisco 49ers have a significant decision to make with quarterback Brock Purdy. Since Purdy is entering his fourth NFL season, he is eligible for a contract extension this offseason.

If the 49ers don’t want to extend Purdy, they could wait and see how he plays throughout the season and revisit contract talks next offseason when he hits free agency.

The 49ers might not want to extend Purdy, no matter what, and might have already filled his role. On Wednesday afternoon, the 49ers agreed to terms with quarterback Mac Jones on a two-year contract.

TWSN’s Daniel Alameda believes Jones will replace Purdy as the team’s new starting quarterback.

“Purdy is looking at potentially receiving a $50 million a year contract, or else he could realistically receive that from another team. When you look at the options for the 49ers, I truly believe Mac Jones could be the fit,” Alameda wrote.”We’ve seen him shine at points in this stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and there are proven reports that in the 2021 NFL Draft, the 49ers were debating between Mac Jones and Trey Lance, but they opted for Trey Lance.”

In 2021, the New England Patriots selected Jones in the first round of the NFL Draft. During his rookie season, he was named to the Pro Bowl. However, Jones finished with an 8-17 record in the Patriots’ next two seasons and was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars last offseason.

Jones is only 26, so he still has time to figure out his game. There’s no better place to learn than to play for 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who seems to be a quarterback whisper.
