BREAKING NEWS: New York Giants Make Decision on Daniel Jones Following Bye Week Deliberations. .cau

November 19, 2024 by cau cau

The Daniel Jones era is seemingly over for the New York Giants after the quarterback was benched coming back off the bye week.

The Giants are 2-8 on the season with their hopes of making the playoffs all but over. Jones struggles have been a huge factor in the teams dismal form, throwing eight touchdowns and seven interceptions in 10 starts this season.

Local favorite Tommy DeVito, who started six games for the Giants in Jones absence last season and eared cult hero status, is expected to be given the starting job for the foreseeable future.

Jones, 27, was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, but he has been at the heart of a miserable era for the franchise. He has a 24-44-1 record as the starter for Big Blue, with 85 total touchdowns against 73 turnovers.

The 2022 season was an outlier, leading the Giants to a 9-6-1 record and an NFC Wildcard berth in Brian Dabolls first season as head coach. They would rout the Minnesota Vikings in the first round of the playoffs before a blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional round.

Jones performances in 2022 earned him a huge contract extension with $160 million over four years, but the move has proven to be a disaster for the franchise.

Jones suffered an early-season neck injury in 2023, only to rupture his anterior cruciate ligament upon his return in Week 9 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

His season was over, but he would get another shot to secure his future with the team in 2024. However, errors have returned to his game in abundance, with nine turnovers through 10 starts.

The Giants offense has been among the least efficient groups in the NFL, with just 309 total yards per game despite the emergence of promising rookie playmakers Malik Nabers and Tyrone Tracy.

Jones time as the starter ended with the overtime defeat to the Carolina Panthers (3-7) in Munich, Germany on Nov. 10. Jones threw two interceptions and no touchdowns in that game, prompting Daboll to tell reporters he would be evaluating things over the bye week.

After a few days of contemplation, the decision has been made to move on. Head coach Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are under significant pressure to get things right quickly in New Jersey after a disastrous stretch since the 2022 playoff run, with an 8-19 record leaving them languishing among the very worst teams in the NFL.

The Giants host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
